A place for men that women love

April 15, 2010 by Caren

Tomorrow I’m getting my hair done and I looove going to visit Patty.  Never used to be that way, but since I found this cool little spot in West Hollywood, my neck of the woods, I have my hair done more often than I should, just for an excuse to visit there.  Although none is needed.  My secret gem started off as a men’s salon in a little yellow house on a little secret street (that everyone who lives here knows).  It’s where men go for massages, manicures, hair, shaves and even to have suits and shirts made by Geoffrey Macon, tailor extraordinaire.  And as we women know, as soon as we get a whiff of a good place it becomes ours, too, and the best hairdressers and tailor brought us sniffing at the doorstep and then inside!  Now it’s my place to go for hair and blouses (well, they call them shirts!).

It’s called The Gendarmerie , and it’s owned by my friend, Topper.  Going there is like visiting friends, everyone’s always happy to see you, and neighborhood gathering at the end of every day.  There’s a couple of outside patios, one with a fireplace, inside living room with fireplace, great food being served, wine  being poured, and you never know who you might bump into.  I’ve seen Billy D. Williams there often, spotted Queen Latifah leaving and seen Olympic swimmer Lenny Krazelberg having shirts fitted (which prompted my nephew to have his aunt take him in for the same).

Sounds like I’m name-dropping and trying to promote this place, both true.  Although it doesn’t need much promotion I am certainly name dropping and sharing one of my happy places to be with you!!  It’s one of our LA secrets and I’m outing it.

About Caren

Caren Banks was born in Paris, France; grew up in South Africa and has now been in the States for almost 35 years - and, wow, had to use her fingers to work that out. Does this mean she's getting younger? Except for 6 years in the 80's when she lived in Connecticut, she's spent the entire time in the Hollywood area in Los Angeles, and the last 20 years or so in the safari business in one form or another.
